ABOUT ABOUT

GODSPELL is a musical based on the Gospel of Matthew, set to a new and modern tempo. The show was originally created as a master’s thesis project at Carnegie Mellon University in 1970 and quickly transformed into a Broadway hit that has spanned over the decades. Our show begins in confusion as renowned philosophers throughout time argue their ideas about the meaning of life. But as John the Baptist blows his horn to signal the coming of Jesus, everything changes. With each parable he presents, Jesus builds a community amongst a cast of everyday people. Popular songs like “Day By Day,” “All Good Gifts,” “Light of the World,” and “We Beseech Thee” show off a signature 70s sound with lyrics based on traditional Episcopal hymns. The disciples make each story come alive with their heartfelt song and dance throughout the production, all the while spreading Jesus’ ever-present message of love. It is not until an act of betrayal that they realize just how important this message is for their lives and the future of humanity.
